Title: VeeCAD on Linux?
Post by gtech on Aug 2nd, 2007 at 4:22pm
Did any of you try to run VeeCAD on a Linux console?

The reason I ask is that some people I know would be interested by a Stripboard program to be run on a Linux system with Wine for example that they already use to run Windows programs, but one Stripboard program that they use doesn't run with Wine on Linux.

VeeCAD could be good news for them. I can't try it myself, but maybe someone did.

Thanks,

Gilles

A couple of users report the free version runs well under Wine and I expect all free versions will be OK.  Also a report that the full version fails under Wine - I know which part of the code causes this and could fix it if I really had to, but it is a lot of work for very few potential customers.

I wonder how many Linux-only users would like to buy VeeCAD full version?

Thanks for the info.

I don't think many Linux users would buy the full version because the first goal of Linux is to be free and provide free software to its users.

At least if the free version works, it would be better than nothing. I'll pass the information.

Thanks again,

Gilles

However, extend that to UNIX, and the answer might be different.

E g a Solaris 10 version would be very welcome, and might even elicit some support from Sun Microsystems, especially if the SW could be compiled for non-X86 CPUs.
If I can be of assistance, let me know, I work in Sun Microsystems, in the computer labs. I might be able to assist.

Thanks, "n3mmr".  No plans at present, but I'm always interested to hear of developments in the computer scene.  94 % of veecad.com hits are from Windows machines, so that's where my effort is concentrated at present.  A small number of Linux users have expressed interest, nil interest expressed by Mac and Solaris users.

Cross platform native code is a lot of work.  However, PCs are now powerful enough that VeeCAD could be written in Java.  I'm not impressed by most Java desktop apps, but its a possibility.

Mac and Solaris users being silent may just mean they have no idea veecad even exists.
That's a tough barrier to break, though.

Java: I know, I know. If you write a Java app absolutely correct, the resulting app is often just as good as native compiled C++-type code: at least on PCs and Sparc machines. And you get an extremely resilient app, too. Having said that, "correct" isn't always "obvious", at least not to a Windows hacker.  Not to any C++ hacker, even.
Do think about it: if you want to try, or if you would like to go more public and make a splash, let me know, and we can see if there's anything practical I could do for you.

A very kind offer, and I can contact you if needed.  If other OS's cut down Microsoft's share of the desktop, I'll look carefully at Java.

I think VeeCAD is a limited-market app and can never really get much publicity interest.  Sales are tiny, and I really just do it for love.  Going to Java might pick up 5 extra sales a year, while porting to Java will kill 2 to 4 years of my spare time!

I reckon a VeeCAD program for SMD parts would be popular - but I can't think of a universal PCB pattern to replace stripboard which will take all the SMD pinouts.  Any ideas, anyone?
