Kicad netlist to Veecad - No joy
Jul 22nd, 2022 at 2:49pm

Hi. Has anyone created a step by step guide on netlists from kicad too vee cad?
Like many posts I'm getting U symbols and zero connection wires and I've only got 2 LEDs in my circuit!!
I understand component names need to match and I know that kicad  'libraries' are needed. So I 'add' them and try an import and get a 'version missing' error.
As an electronic engineer (well I have a BEng from uni but that was a long time ago!) and being a current software engineer it is really frustrating.
I've had loads of Delphi experience so I'm tempted to pull the code and find out what's going wrong, and maybe even fix it, but I have 2 young boys (7&9) plus a full time job so spare time is almost non-existent.
I can take my kicad schematic and move it to Vero myself, with paper and a pencil like to old days but I'm really keen to try Veecad... But I can't get started.
I don't mind creating a comprehensive 'How To' guide, or 'Understanding Netlists' guide but currently I'm dead in the water.
Normally Im good at fault finding and hack about in the .net text files myself to replace component names with those Veecad understands but no joy.
Still just U shapes and zero wires. And the kicad libraries .lib files just say version missing error.
Thanks for your help folks.

I may have answered my own question.
I found this on this forum.

I was adding the libs to Veecad, but I need to add the libs to kicad!! Who knew!??
Will try when I get a moment and will report....

Hello Jon, and welcome.

If outline names don't match you get the "U" component. If pin names don't match you get a warning dialog and more detail on the menu item "Netlist -> View", "Project" tab. If you have the wrong netlist format or a library belonging to a different software, VeeCAD will tell you about the structure of the file and where it is going wrong.

The usual Kicad schematic libraries are built to different standards, scales, styles, names and pin names, and liable to revision at any time. Therefore I provide Kicad schematic libraries. You can turn any "U" component into a real one by going "Board -> Outlines" and editing the outline on the spot - no fuss with libraries.

In the VeeCAD help file, look for the topic, "Getting Started -> Kicad & VeeCAD".

I used Delphi every day in my work. Test, calibration, data gathering, utilities, print services, firmware updaters. Magic! I am still on D2009 here and not coding much in my retirement.

You are a lucky man with the 2 sons - it's a busy time of life. My 2 boys are grown men. How the time races by!

I hope VeeCAD is useful for you. If something is a problem, don't hesitate to post here or email me.
